One concept from Forgive My Guilt that relates to Marigolds is talking about the sins they committed. “Not always sure what things called sins may be, I am sure of one sin I have done (128). This says that even if you don’t exactly know what sin is, you definitely know when you’ve done it. Lizabeth felt awful after destroying Miss. Lottie’s marigolds. She knew she had done something she shouldn’t have. This poem also talks about how some birds were killed, and the person who killed them felt terrible. He hoped that his guilt would be forgiven. It reminds me of how Lizabeth ‘killed’ the marigolds, and hoped that Mrs. Lottie would forgive her of her sin. This just shows how Forgive My Guilt and Marigolds have similar ideas and concepts.

An event thatr is similar between “Forgive My Guilt” and “Marigolds” is the death or destruction of something beautiful that had once brightned the world. In Marigolds the flowers are destroyed ” trampling and pulling and destroying the perfect yellow blooms” (126) and the two glorious birds ‘my gun went off, they ran with broken wings” (128). They also have a common theme, two adolescents learneda hard lesson of losing their innocence after taking something’s right to live without really thinking of the long- term consequences. A common concept is the preciousness of life. Once that life is gone it can’t be given back again.

In the poem Forgive My Quilt there was that same guilt Lizabeth felt in the story Marigolds. Even when the years have gone by he writes “but still i hear them” (128). This is simlar to when Lizabeth said she could still see the images of the destroyed marigolds. Even though they are older and that is years behind them they feel bad about what they did. Those memories have stayed with them throughout their life.

One concept from the poem that relates to “Marigolds” is that they both did something bad when they were kids. In Marigolds Lizabeth destroys Miss Lottie’s flowers and in “Forgive My Guilt” he kills birds. Another one is that they both feel guilty about it after they do it. We know that because Lizabeth cries and he still hears the birds. The last one is that they both destroy something beautiful. In “Marigolds” she destroys flowers and in “Forgive My Guilt” he kills birds.

A concept that i noticed in the poem Forgive My Guilt is that the boy in the story knows that he has sinned and done wrong. The boy in the story had shot a bird and it cried like a sorrowful high flute. The boy felt bad and hoped that the bird would forgive his guilt. This compares to the story marigolds because Lizabeth felt bad about destroying Miss Lotties marigolds. The theme for both stories is being sad about what they have done.

One of the themes that is related is guilt. One of them felt guilty because she tore up someone’s flowers and the other felt guilty for shooting off two birds wings. Both the birds and the flowers seemed out of place. The flowers were in the garden of a shabby worn down house, and the birds were alone on the beach. They both also were very sorry for what they did and wanted to be forgiven.

One concept is that the boy is guilty for killing the bird. In Marigold Lizabeth feels guilty for ripping up the marigolds.a event that was a like was when the boy shoots the bird and when
Lizabeth rips up the flowers. The story and poem relate by the guilt people feel after they do things they regret.

One concept is that in the poem the boy feels guilty for killing the bird and in Marigolds Lizabeth feels guilty about ripping up all the marigolds that Miss Lottie tried to grow. One event was when the boy shot the bird was the same as when Lizabeth ripped up the marigolds. This whole poem and the story relate by the guilt of people doing things that they regret and feeling bad about it and wants forgiveness.

One of the concepts that relate to the Marigolds story is because the boy feels guilty because he shot he may have shot one of the birds. It relates to the story because Lizbeth felt guilty also becaus she ruined Miss Lottie’s garden and her Marigolds. Another concept is when both charcters ruined their surrondings. The boy ruined his surroundings because when he shot the birds their cries went out into the sky. Lizbeth ruined her surroundings by damaging Miss Lottie’s Marigold garden. They both felt guilty after their acttions which made the story and the poem more meaningful.

One thing is that Lizabeth feels guilty for tearing up the flowers. Then she has a garden of her own. In the same way the poet kills a bird and he is remorsful that he killed the bird. He never forgets what he did. The same thing is true in the story Lizabeth never forgets how she destroyed the flowers.

The poem “Forgiven My Guilt” has a sad sort of theme to it. It relates to the story “Marigolds” because Lizabeth needed to be forgiven for wut she did to Mrs. Lottie. Such as completly destroying her flowers. She destoyed the flowers in anger towards her mother in a way because she was never there and also to her father which she said led her to destruction.

Some of the related themes are that are similar in both Marigolds and Forgive My Guilt are contrition, beauty, and remembrance. Both the narrator of the poem and Lizabeth did something that they later regretted and because of that they have felt guilty ever since. Lizabeth destroyed Miss Lottie’s flowers and the narrator of Forgive My Guilt shot at the helpless birds. Another similarity is how the items that were destroyed were beautiful in the eyes of the narrator. The marigolds were one of the only things that were alive and bright in the neighborhood and the birds were as blue as flowers and legs as bright as gold. Lastly, is the example of remembrance, when Lizabeth trampled Miss Lottie’s flowers she felt sorry for what she did and in remembrance of her planted some marigolds of her own and when the narrator of the poem remembers back on that night when he shot the birds, he wonders if the birds ever forgave him of his dreadful mistake.

Forgive My Guilt relates to Marigolds because both plots are about ruining something to make you feel better but then feeling guilty about it. Both characters in Marigolds and Forgive My Guilt are haunted by the memory of what they have done for their own gain.

I think that this poem relates to Marigolds in the way that someone wronged someone else that did nothing to provoke them. In the story, Marigolds, Miss Lottie never did anything wrong to the kids. She just wanted to take care of her flowers. Lizabeth then unjustly destroys Miss Lottie’s marigolds just because Lizabeth was feeling angry. In the poem the author shoots two birds. They were just minding their own buisness and were then shot. They were shot simply because the author was bored. Both stories had an act of unjust cruelty.

In both entry’s, “Forgive My Guilt” and “Marigolds” the same message is given. In both entrys something beautiful is destroyed. Both of the persons who destroyed it feel very guilty afterwards. The theme of both stories is to think before you act. Destroying something is very easy to do, but the feeling you get after is absolutly horrible.
16. Rebekah | September 23rd, 2009 at 2:17 pm
The narrator of the story feels guilty because she helped destroy Miss Lottie’s flowers. The author of the poem feels guilty because he injured birds. They are both later haunted with their guilt. But in the story, The narrator keeps the flowers alive by replanting them for Miss Lottie. The author of the poem is only hoping that nature will forgive him. He doesn’t do much about it.

‘Forgive My Guilt” and “Marigolds” in similar in a couple of things in common. One thing they have in common is the guilt. Lizabeth feels guilty for trampling the marigolds and in ”Forgive My Guilt” its states they were guilty for killing the birds. Another thing they have in common is that the both have flashbacks. They recall what happened and feel sad for it. These are ways that these both are similar.

I think the peom’s themes and concepts can realate to the story because both characters have done something wrong, and feel a strong sense of guilt afterwards. A quote from forgive my guilt states “but I have hoped for years all that is wild, airy, and beautiful will forgive my guilt” says the main character. In Marigolds, Lizabeth feels guilty after destorying Miss Lottie’s Marigolds, and in the book, Miss Lottie’s flowers mean so much to her, but the are destroyed. In the poem, the character kills a bird. Even though it might not seem significant God made that bird, and we should think of God’s creation as important.

Marrigolds and Forgive My Guilt both contain guilt. They also both contain a memory that they regret. In Marrigolds she regrets ripping up the flowers. In Forgive My Guilt he regrets shooting the birds. Both stories show sad emotions.

One event that relates to the story, Marigolds, was that when the boy in the poem shot the birds wings he didn’t realize how this could effect the birds in many ways. In Marigolds, LIzabeth didn’t realize how destroying the marigolds would effect Miss Lottie. Just as the boy could still hear the birds crying in his mind, Lizabeth could still remeber the mounds of yellow marigolds in her mind. Both the boy and LIzabeth felt gulity years later. Both also grew up from these mistakes and could understand life better.
21. Lisa E | September 23rd, 2009 at 2:44 pm
The poem relates to the story because it talks about guilt caused by something the narrators did as kids. Both Lizabeth and the boy wanted to be forgiven of what they have done in the past, but neither saw the person or animal they had hurt to find out. The guilt that they have, they are still carrying now. Partly because they didn’t know if they were forgiven. Also because they are much older now so they both realize what they did wrong to cause the guilt.

This poem relates to the story in a number of ways. One being the boy shot the birds and denied them the right to be free and fly with all the other birds. This is similar to the story because when Lizabeth ripped up the marigolds, it cancelled Miss Lottie’s last glimmer of hope. When the birds continued to put up their defense and swam away from the boy, it symbolized Lizabeth continuing on with her changed life of compassion instead of innocence.
“…but i still hear them
Over all the sounds of sorrow in war or peace
I have ever heard, time cannot drown them” (128).
“…for despite my wild contritionshe never planted marigolds again” (126).

One event in the pem that is similar to the story is the way that both of the texts talk about someone that did something that they should ot have. And the person feeling guilty about it afterwards. Both of the characters did a wrong action and them wished that they had not. A similar event in the story was a character doing something wrong. The theme of both of these selections is repentance. Lastly, the stories also show the consequences of not forgiving that person that did wrong.

The things that are similar in the story “Marigolds” and the poem “Forgive My Guilt” are the theme of poignancy, the same concept of recalling in the storyline, and the concept of remorse. Both stories have the theme of poignancy because they both have someone that has done something wrong and the results cause a deep sadness in the mood. The story and the poem have the same concept of remembering actions and thoughts in the storyline that had a significant meaning to them. In “Marigolds”, Lizabeth recalls destroying Miss Lottie’s marigolds, and in “Forgive My Guilt”, the narrator describes when he injured two birds. In each story, each character feels a deep remorse for what they had done and describes the feelings the actions triggered.

The poem “forgive my guilt ” has many things in common for “marigolds”.For example both characters in the story have done something wrong someone or something else. In marigolds Lizabeth destroyed Ms.Lottie flowers which cause her to feel guilty. In Forgive my guilt, the boy hurt two birds and he heard there cries for days. In conclusion both characters are still looking for forgiveness for what they have done

IN the story and in the poem they both were guilty. They realize what they did. What they didn’t realize was that they were actually helping somebody out.

In both the story and the poem, the writers are in the midst of flowers. Both have destroyed nature, one was marigolds, and the other was birds. Both writers carry guilt of their destructive acts into adulthood. In Marigolds, Lizabeth writes “The years have taken me worlds away from that time and that place, from the dust and squalor of our lives, and from the bright thing that I destroyed in a blind, childish striking out at God knows what”(126). The same sentiment is found in the poem Forgive My Guilts. “I ever have heard, time cannot drown them, those slender flutes of sorrow never cease…. But I have hoped for years all that is wild, airy, and beautiful will forgive me guilt”(128).

Forgive My Guilt by Robert P. Tristram Coffin has many events, concepts or themes that relate to the story Marigolds. The concept of Marigolds is guilt and so is the poem Forgive My Guilt. When Lizabeth destroyed Miss Lottie’s marigolds she immediately felt remorseful and guilty which was also similar how the boy felt when he shot the wings of the two birds. The concept of guiltiness and the sought of forgiveness are found in both Marigolds and Forgive My Guilt. For example Lizabeth says at the end of the story “yet there are times when the image of those passionate yellow mounds returns with a painful poignancy”. Also the last stanza of Forgive My Guilt the boy says “Airy, and beautiful will forgive my guilt”. These are the reasons why I think Forgive My Guilt has many events, concepts or themes that relate to the story Marigolds.

The poem Forgive My Guilt by Robert P. Tristram Coffin relates to the story Marigolds because the main characters in the story and poem both feel a deep contrition about what they did. Whether it was killing poor little birds or uprooted a beautiful bed of marigolds. In Forgive My Guilt and in Marigolds both of the characters wanted their guilt’s to be forgiven by the ones that they hurt the most. Lizabeth wanted all while Miss Lottie was alive (before she died) to plant more marigolds so Lizabeth wouldn’t feel so bad about ruining them just as the young boy in Forgive My Guilt hoped that the wild and airy beautiful will forgive his guilt. The main thing that mainly connects these two pieces of writing was the order of events. In each story the character both knew what they were going to do and they felt no regret until after they did it.

In the poem, a young boy shoots a bird in the wing with out thinking. After he shot it he felt really guilty. This is just like in the story Marigolds, when Lizabeth destroys Miss Lottie’s marigolds and afterwards fell really guilty. Another thing they have alike is when either character remembers that memory they still feel the guilt. So these stories are trying to tell you that think about what you do before you do it or you might end up feeling guilty for it for ever.

There are some similarities between the poem “Forgive My guilt” and the story “Marigolds”. One similarity is how Lizabeth went out against Miss Lottie in anger. This is similar to how the character in the poem shot the bird and it went down and couldnt fly. Another similarity is the birds eventually died and nothing else to live for. This is similar to how Miss Lottie passed away after the kids messed with her. One more similarity is how Lizabeth felt bad after what she had done. The character in the poem felt bad after he shot the birds.
32. Chris Bankston | September 23rd, 2009 at 5:20 pm
Something that happened in the poem that related to the story Marigolds is that the main character of the poem was like Lizabeth in the fact that they both did something that could not be undone. In Marigolds Lizabeth ripped up and pulled out all of Miss Lottie’s marigolds. That gratuitous action scarred Miss Lottie because it was a major part of her llife that could not be fixed. Likewise the character in the poem broke the wings of those birds, but the birds got away before he could put them out of their misery. It was a complete mistake but because of that mistake the birds would never again be able to experience the thrill of flying again. That shows that these two conflicts are one in the same.

The storys are alike is some ways. This peom is like the story in one way because they boy had guilt for what he did to the birds just like Lizabeth had guilt for taking out the garden. Also in the boy never say the birds again just like Lizabeth did not see the old house again. They both have very similar concepts and themes.
34. Callum A | September 24th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
The poem “Forgive My Guilt” is in several ways similar to “Marigolds”. In both pieces there is a child who does something wrong and feels guilty about it for the rest of their lives. In “Forgive My Guilt”, the boy wounds a bird, and condemns it to a torturous death. “But I have hoped for years all that is wild, / Airy and beautiful will forgive my guilt.” In short, he destroys the bird. In “Marigolds”, Lizabeth also destroys something. She destroys Miss Lottie’s marigolds that she worked so hard to nurture and protect. “Yet, there are times when the image of those passionate yellow mounds returns with a painful poignancy.” There is an underlying theme in both pieces about guilt.
35. Meagan Collins | September 27th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
The poem, “Forgive My Guilt” by Robert P. Tristram Coffin relates to the story, “Maigolds” in a few ways. First off, both the narrator of the poem and Lizabeth did something and afterwards felt guilty about it and were reminded of it many times prior to the event. Also, Lizabeth and the narrator did something for no reason, just impulsively. The poem and story both have one theme being, Once you do something, you can’t take it back. Both main characters of the poem and story ruined their innocence,at the events they did.

When the boy in “Forgive My Guilt” shot the birds, destroying their wings it ended up killing them. This is relevant to what Lizabeth did to Miss Lottie by destroying her marigolds. By destroying them it crippled her, making her a sad old woman. It is also similar in the fact the it changed the sinner. In “Marigolds”, it turned Lizabeth into an woman instead of a girl, and in “Forgive My Guilt”, it taught the boy guilt.
37. Raymond | September 28th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
one of the concepts is that is the boy that shot the bird felt really guilt. two events are that. the boy had shot the bird and eilabeth had destroyed the flowers. a theme is they felt really guilty for what they have done
